Queens Contest Update!!

Just in case some of you haven't heard, the mum sale was a 100% success! Mady Fisher, Katy Dickey, Amber Dickey, and parents of these awesome kids all got out there and sold their little hearts out Saturday - to the tune of 100 mums sold. Mady plans to do a fundraiser every month. The mum sale was the one for October. November we will have 2. 1st will be a raffle for Spooktacular Bull Bash on 11/5/11 and 2nd is Bake sale at Texas National Banks in both Rusk and Jacksonville.

The bake sale will be 11/23/11 and most likely, we are prepared to stay as long as the bank will allow us! We will need baked goods as well as kids to help sell.

Spooktacular Bull Bash is on 11/5 at LMC and we will be raffling off 2 wall crosses valued at $50 each. Just a reminder, Mady can not be at Spooktacular because of prior commitments but has secured a booth for us. So we are asking that the club please step up and commit to helping and be there. (need volunteers to man the table and sell queens and raffle tickets - free admission to bull bash!!) Monica can be reached at 903/586-9301 (work) until 4:30 and 903/625-1110 (cell) anytime after that. If you need to leave a message, please do! We also have 500+ queen's tickets available to sell! Footbridge MUM Sales!!

Footbridge Queens Contestant Mady Fisher announces the Mum Sale Fundraiser!! We will be selling Mums and livestock show tickets this Saturday - Oct. 15 - from 10:00a - 5:00p (or until we sell out) from the H&R Block parking lot in Rusk. If you are able to help sell for any amount of time, please come by and help. There will be adults there at all times so you can drop off the kids with us if you so desire! Please also pass the word along to anyone and everyone and help us raise funds for the club and the Queens Contest!

East Texas Show Star Series

This is a great opportunity for 4-H families that are new to showing livestock, as well as those who are seasoned veterans of the show ring. Friday, October 7, 2011 is the "EARLY" deadline toregister for the above mentioned event. After October 7th, a $10 increase will be asssed for those registrations received after that date. The deadline to enter the District Photography contest is February 14, 2012. You will enter your photos at 4-H Connect, just like last year. District is following the State Guidelines, including the TRAIN theme. So, if you print the State regulations that is what you will follow for District.

However, District will cost $6 for your initial photo, and 50 cents for each photo after that.

I am still working out the County Contest, so I will get that info to you as soon as I can. :-)

Kick Off meeting

Footbridge 4H will kick off the 2011/2012 year with a meeting & picture on Monday, September 26 at 6:30p at the Footbridge Park. The meeting will be mostly informational and include officer elections, livestock show information and setting up events and committees. Bring a lawn chair or blanket while we enjoy the evening outdoors. We look forward to seeing you there!

Next monthly meeting will be Tuesday, October 11 @ Jim Hogg Park Pavilion with Scarecrow Building as the activity.

If you are not aware, 4-H Leadership Lab is a District Event open to any senior 4-H Member 13 & up. It is a two 3 day /2 night camp with lots of activities and chances to meet 4-H'ers from all over the District. This year's theme will be "Ready; SET; Go". I know it may not sound cool, but there will be lots of really cool science experiments to perform and projects to participate in. Believe me...If you go, you'll have a BLAST!

If you want to attend, you'll need to complete and submit the following forms to the County 4-H Office no later than June 15th at 5PM.

You'll have to register and pay ($80.00) online through 4-H Connect no later than Midnight on June 15th.

Join us on the SCARECROW TRAIL

The officers were hard at work last weekend putting together a 4H Scarecrow Family to represent Footbridge 4H along the Scarecrow Trail in Jacksonville. They will be setting up the family this week.

Please JOIN US to walk the trail! Footbridge will meet at the Jacksonville Arboretum parking lot at 10:30a on Saturday, October 16. Admission is one canned good.

This will be a fun time to get together and is a community service project for our club as well. Please wear your Footbridge shirt if you have one and we'll take a picture with our Scarecrow Family!

Arboretum is located on the Loop in Jacksonville. From Rusk, take 69 to Jacksonville. Turn right on the Loop. Tx Forestry Service building is on right (before funeral home). Arboretum is behind Forestry Bldg.

What can you do in ONE DAY?

October 9 is OneDay 4-H. What can you do in your community on One Day with 4-H? The possibilities are endless. In fact, we have two groups forming as we speak.

Bridging for Animals - group of Footbridge 4H members pursuing a day of help at the animal shelter

Bridging the Pages - group of Footbridge 4H members looking to spend the morning reading to and visiting with seniors. Considering turning this into a monthly project and/or working with new senior recreation center in Rusk

One Day 4-H is a day of nation-wide community service by 4-H members. This day of community service is whatever each 4-H member, club, or county program wants it to be. It could be as simple as picking up trash and mowing the lawn for someone to elaborate as hosting a 5K Walk/Run and raising money for a cause. It is whatever you want it to be.

If you would like to join one of these groups OR create your own service project to do on October 8, please let us know. Registration is online and due by October 1.

Gearing up for Footbridge!!

The school year has started and Footbridge 4H is gearing up to begin our new year! Online registration is underway. If you have been a member in the past, you just have to renew your membership. New members should enroll so you will be on our roster. (see link on right to join/renew)

Our first meeting will be TUESDAY, September 14 in the youth meeting room at FBC-Rusk (park and go in at back of building). Come and see what 4H is all about and help us kick off the new year. Also available at this first meeting will be the Cherokee County Livestock Show information.

Congrats to the Cherokee County teams that participated in the Food Challenge on Saturday. The Senior team will be going to State Competition for their 3rd place showing. Our Mixed teams also did a wonderful job - Team 1 placed 2nd and Team 2 placed 5th!!

There will be a hands-on presentation by Tatum Gates (and Jessica) on rabbits - show and care - following the business meeting. They have a lot of information to share from their experience over the past year or so after knowing nothing about rabbits to jumping in with both feet and winning grand champion at the livestock show.

Youth Loan Workshops

Rusk's Singletary Public Library Hosts Youth Loan Workshops for 4-H & FFA Projects

This is a free workshop for all youth 10 yrs and up currently enrolled in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter. The loan terms are: up to $5,000, for one year, with minimum interest paid back after the sale of the project. The loan can be used to purchase market or breeding livestock, materials for shop projects, or to purchase feed for livestock.

On October 10, 2009, the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program invite all 4-H members, parents, and volunteers to set aside one day to give back to the communities and counties that have given so much to the 4-H Program. one day 4-H is a state-wide community service day where an individual, club, or county 4-H Program can choose ways to give back. It can be as simple as mowing the lawn of someone who is homebound, to as extensive as sponsoring a fun walk/run for a medical center. Regardless of the magnitude of the event, it is just one day in which our 4-H members come together to say thank you for more than 102 years of 4-H support in Texas.

The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program has a website dedicated to the one day 4-H event (texas4-h.org). We encourage you to go and visit the site and explore the resources available for 4-H members, clubs, and county to use in developing their project. Resources include a packet for instructions and directions for organizing your one day experience to a resource manual with more than a thousand ideas for community service. Also on the site is a link for 4-H groups who plan to participate in the day to sign-up. By signing up, you qualify your group for awards and recognition for your hard work on October 10, 2009. It also allows the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program and our partners at AgriLife Communications to know of the innovative and cool projects being done so we can come and take photo’s, video and get assist with media. Please help us by making sure your group is registered by September 30, 2009.

IMPORTANT info on SALE at Livestock Show

This letter was received from the Board of Directors - Cherokee County Stock Show and Exposition and seemed important to those showing and anticipating sale of their animals.

To: All FFA Teachers and 4-H Leaders

Re: Cherokee County Jr. Livestock Show Sale Numbers

Ladies and Gentlemen:

After entering all the 2009 entries that are “marked to sell” into our system, we discovered a 50 percent increase in the total numbers versus our 2008 total numbers. At this time last year, before ineligibility issues, animal issues, etc. we had a total of 203 entries marked to sell. This year we have a total of 305 entries marked to sell. With this increase in the number of entries to be sold and the current state of the economy, we discussed this matter at our board meeting last night.

After a lengthy discussion, it became obvious that we as the board of directors must do something to limit the number of projects being allowed to sell. This is a decision that the board takes very seriously. The decision has been made to allow a maximum number of 200 projects sell at our 2009 show. This is approximately 65 percent of the total number or projects “marked to sell”. This number will be fine tuned after all Divisions have been judged during the junior livestock show. A committee has been formed to look at all the ribbon placings to determine exactly who will sell. The number will not be less than 200 projects, but could possibly increase by a few to finish out a particular ribbon placing. As stated in the rules, no white ribbons will be eligible to sell.

Based on the percentage of “marked to sell” entries in each Division compared to the total number of “marked to sell” entries, the number of entries in each Division that will be allowed to sell are listed below:
Beef – 16 entries, Dairy – 7 entries, Goats – 26 entries, Swine – 37 entries, Poultry – 13 entries, Shop – 77 entries, Pen of Heifers – 2 entries, Rabbits – 22 entries

Please pass this information on to your FFA students and 4-H club members, parents, etc., so everyone is aware of this change.

Also, please pass on to your students and club members, parents, buyer’s group members, and all supporters, the fact that this year’s sale will begin at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon with the animals. The shop sale will follow immediately after all the animals are sold.

Small Engine Project

The Cherokee County 4H Small Engine Project is about to get started. Details HERE. Anyone interested is requested to contact the project leader (me) as soon as possible.

Also, projects such as Small Engines and the Food and Fashion shows are potentially a great way to grow our club. I don't think most people realize that while they are a big and important part of 4H, there is a lot more to it than agriculture and livestock. If you know someone with an interest or potential interest in any of the upcoming projects, talk to them about it. Give them the web site. Bring them to a workshop. Feel free to give them my email address or phone number or have them stop by the Extension Office. The best way to attract new members is to show them what we do, what YOU do.

Awards Banquet

A big 'thank you' those who attended Saturday's 2008 Cherokee County Awards Banquet. Our PALs Reporter (and manager of East Texas 4H club) has a very nice write-up in today's Cherokeean Herald and Lookout 4H has quite a few pictures posted on their blog. In addition to the participation certificates handed out to all members who participated in one or more programs last year, awards were also given out to individuals and clubs who amassed the most participation points.

I'm proud to say that Footbridge 4H's own Katy Dickey won Clover Kid of the Year for her participation in Consumer Decision Making, Food and Nutrition, and Entemology.

"Hearts in Bloom" 4H club, now "East Texas', though the smallest club in our county won 'Club of the Year'. Thomas Parker with the Hearts in Bloom 4-H Club was awarded Junior 4-H Member of the Year, Katie Foster with the Cloverleaf 4-H Club was named Intermediate 4-H Member of the Year and Zachary Parker with the Hearts in Bloom 4-H Club was awarded Senior 4-H member of the Year.

A member recieves one point for each project or competition he or she participates in. If the member wins ribbon,they receive additional points: 3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd for a possible total of up to 4 points per competition. Obviously, then, the more you particiapte, the more points you acrue and who knows: maybe at next year's award banquet (which will be much earlier in the year) you can be next year's 'Member of the Year' in your class!

The October Footbridge club meeting is tonight at 6:30 at the Country Extension Office. We have a great deal of important business to attend to including Banquet items, Queens voting and ticket sales, fund raising, Christmas parade and several items of interest to all members. It is also your oppurtunity to bring up or ask about anything you would like to see YOUR 4H be involved in. Our club can be anything that you, the members, want it to be. But you only get out what you put in.

The workshop on October 30th at 6:30p.m. at the County Extension Office will include livestock judging as well as hose judging. This is an informational meeting to gauge interest and go over project materials. Anyone who is at all interested either horse or livestock judging should make plans to attend because this meeting will determine what exactly is going to be included in each of these projects. If you miss this meeting, then what you are specifically interested in is less likely to be included. This class is open to ALL Cherokee County 4H members.

YES! Registration Deadline

The registration deadline for YES! appears to be next Monday, October 20. I am waiting for confirmation from Willie on this but anyone who wants to attend should assume that they need to be registered by then. I believe registration fees are $40 per member or adult but will need to confirm that as well.

**UPDATE** Registration deadline for YES! is October 24th. Please have your medical waiver (email me or Willie to get a copy) and $40.00 registration fee to me or Willie by noon on the 24th. I have not spoken to Vonnie about whether or not PALs will is willing to reimburse members who attend, but I will be contacting her about getting that on the next PALs meeting agenda.

The 2008 Cherokee County Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, October 18. I believe the tentative venue is the Cherokee County Livestock Show Barn but this has not been confirmed.
Refreshments will be cupcakes, cookies and ice cream. PAL's will provide the ice cream but our club needs to bring cupcakes and/or cookies.
Also, I need a head count of how many Footbridge members plan to attend. So, please, check your calenders and get back to me ASAP with whether you plan to attend or not, and how many people you expect to bring with you: the Awards Banquet is a great way to show prospective new members what 4H is all about.

September PALs Meeting Highlights

Our own C0-Leader, Tandi Dickey, was voted PALs secretary. Also, through an obscure parliamentary procedure know as 'opening my mouth' it appears Yours Truly has been...anointed...PALs Parliamentarian. Not sure how that happened but in any case, if you find that as difficult to believe as I do, check out the PALs blog for proof.

PROGRAM LEADERS DESPERATELY NEEDED

When each member filled out their membership form they also listed several subjects in which they had interest. Cherokee County 4H clubs expressed interest in a wide variety of programs including things such as Small Engines, Shooting, Forrestry, Water Safety, ATV Safety and several others in addition to the more traddional Livestock-related events. These and many other projects require one or more adults to put together and organize. This is not as complicated as it sounds. Parents and other interested adults: please consider volunteering a ver small amount of your time to help our 4H kids make the most of their club. I'll have more to say on that in another post. Meanwhile, please contact me, Brenda, or Willie for information on how YOU can help.

CONCESSION STAND

Running the concession stand at the Cherokee County Livestock Show is PALs biggest (in many ways only) fundraiser. I dont' have the exact numbers in front of me, but it made up roughly 2/3 of PALs budget last year (somethign like $7K in 3 days of which over $5K was profit). It has also been a source of contention between clubs. Every club is required to participate and provide staff. A commitee has been formed to oversee the running and staffing of the concession stand this year in an attempt to make it easier and fairer for all clubs. I do not have the final membership for this comittee but it should be posted on the PALs blog shortly. I believe Tandi Dickey from our club is on the commitee but anyone one else interested in helping represent Footbridge 4H's interests in this vital area please contact Tandi (as PALs Secretary) or Vonnie Anderson (PALs president) for information.

FUNDRAISING
PALs is also looking for ideas on additional ways to raise money to fund 4H. PALs is the county wide organization that funds camps, awards, events and contests, and helps members with entrance fees and other expenses at District and State level competitions. Any ideas on additional fundraising ideas for either Footbridge or PALs would be greatly appreciated.

FUTURE PALS MEETINGS
It was decided that PALs would meet at 7 pm at the Cherokee County Elec. Co-op (subject to availablility) on the FOURTH MONDAY of EVERY OTHER MONTH with additional meetings either done via telephone or internet as needed. Committee meetings will be determined by each commitee. The Next PALs meeting is, therefore on November 24th. School is still in session so that shouldn't interfere with too many people's Thanksgiving plans.
